Responsibilities: * Develops, designs, documents, and/or applies new laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test fixtures needed for laboratory testing or in support of upgrading the laboratory infrastructure. * Supports the installation, testing and validation of the new and/or revised instrumentation, automated systems or test fixtures to ensure quality compliance and user requirements. * Operates designated laboratory equipment and tools as directed. * Responds to user requests to repair and/or modify existing laboratory instrumentation, automated systems and test fixtures. * As applicable, records observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms as the record of laboratory support activities. * May plan laboratory support activities, and evaluate results, as directed. * Ensures both new and existing test systems meet safety requirements and compliance with the local laws. * Updates and maintains automation hardware and/or software as needed. * Prepares technical documentation such as manual instructions for hardware and software, calibration procedures, test method validations, etc. * Advises and trains others on the use of laboratory instrumentation, automated systems and test fixtures. * May assist PEs and/or Engineering to validate modified existing methods or develop and validate new test methods. * Assists in developing annual budgetary goals, capital expenditure budget for laboratory equipment, and tactical plans for the assigned laboratory section. * Acts as lead for laboratory capital projects and assumes responsibility for all technical aspects, schedule, budget, vendor interaction and Facility Department support. * Proactively seeks automation opportunities to resolve complex testing issues. * Schedules, Calibrate, and maintains laboratory instrumentation and apparatus. * May determine accuracy of instruments and the measurement uncertainty for equipment calibration. * Issues calibration certificates based on internal procedures. * As necessary, adapts procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet more complex requirements. * Defines the engineering units, ranges, and/or acceptance criteria of instruments to be externally calibrated based on manufacturers equipment specifications, standard requirements and/or accreditations. * Checks, verifies and accepts calibration certificates from external calibration service provider(s). * Develops internal procedures for laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance. * Works with global colleagues to drive technical and operational consistency and to maintain efficiency and scalability in global laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, test fixtures and/or laboratory infrastructure within a local scope. * Operates a computer to extract/input readily available information and to use available software. * Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job. * Read and follow the UL Standards of Business Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices. * Performs other duties as directed.
Qualifications: * Bachelors' degree or diploma from an accredited university through a formal program of study in Engineering or relevant Engineering Discipline (such as Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology or Physics but not limited to these disciplines only). * Generally, 6 years directly related experience in the calibration and/or development and support of laboratory instrumentation, automation tools and processes. * Makes difficult tactical decisions even when all the information is not available. * Leverages and embraces the diverse knowledge and expertise of the team to solve problems. * Takes an outside-in approach, seeing, understanding and including others points of view, to problem solving. * Ensures customer convenient solutions meet both customer and company needs. * Demonstrates ability to proactively adapt actions through preparation and contingency plans. * Works with the team to implement change initiatives. * Delegates tasks appropriately. * Builds networks across UL to promote organizational success. * Communicates effectively in written and oral form. * Follows instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. * Demonstrates a good knowledge of equipment used within the conformity assessment industry. * Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities. * Proven ability to work with diverse, global teams. * Develops and delivers clear, impactful, actionable communications to all stakeholders. * Uses proven methods and Lean/Six Sigma methodologies to solve difficult problems with effective solutions. * Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do job at a high level of accomplishment. * Is a highly trusted, direct, and truthful individual. * Experience leading change initiatives across an organization. * Ability to work on and/or lead sometimes complex cross-functional and cross-geography project teams. * Ability to coach and mentor other laboratory support personnel. * Knowledge of the most common laboratory test equipment and the principles of measurement uncertainty. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as operations, maintenance and procedure manuals. * Ability to compose routine reports and business correspondence. * Ability to present standard information and respond to questions from individuals or small groups of internal or external clients.
