Position Summary: Reporting to the University Librarian, working closely with other library staff including Data and Visualization service staff at Duke University Libraries (DUL), the Data and Visualization Librarian position provides important role in developing, designing, and implementing data and visualization resources and services to support faculty, students, and other researchers on campus. The incumbent will use a variety of technologies, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to provide the best possible knowledge and experience for library patrons in data and visualization practice. Reports to: University Librarian, DKU Essential Duties: 1. Leading the design, development and implementation of sustainable and scalable data and visualization resources and services, as pertains to the curricular and research needs of the institution and building the foundation for these services in support of the Data & Visualization Workshop of the Library. 2. Contributing to university-wide initiatives to develop and design policies, services, and infrastructure to enable faculty and students to manage, visualize, represent, and share their research data. 3. Collaborating with other librarians and campus stakeholders to support teaching and learning and provide workshops in the use of data and visualization tools for faculty, staff and students in all academic disciplines. 4. Provides basic and in-depth research consultation on data and visualization to DKU faculty, students, and staff. 5. Working with other library units, the Office of Research Support, research programs, and technical experts to develop and implement infrastructures and services that enhance access to data through visualization and effective design. 6. Partnering with faculty, other researchers, and the staff at Office of Research Support to plan and create effective, innovative, and sustainable data management based on researcher needs, current standards, and best practices. 7. Collaborating with Systems Librarian in supporting the function of the digital media booths, LiuShuang Film/Music Appreciation Room of the Library. Other Duties: 1. Planning, developing, and delivering library outreach programs with a focus on data management and data visualization. 2. Facilitating and coordinating special library projects. 3. Compiling statistics, analyzing data, and preparing reports relating to areas of responsibility and library-wide activities. 4. Performing other job related duties as required or assigned 5. Supervising staff, interns and student workers as needed. 6. University employees' job responsibilities will continue to expand in scope and depth as the University grows in size and complexity in its programs. Required Qualifications: 1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Information Science, Data Science, (Business) Data Analytics, or advanced subject degree or Ph.D. candidacy. 2. Advanced proficiency in a range of data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, Illustrator), quantitative and qualitative data analysis tool (e.g. NVivo, SPSS), and programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SAS, Stata), with a strong understanding of best practices in data visualization 3. Knowledge of research processes and the role of data and visualization within contemporary research. 4. Ability to monitor and creatively respond to emerging researcher data needs. 5. Solid oral and written communication skills in English. 6. Strong communication, planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills. 7. Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and methods in data and visualization. 8. Demonstrated abilities in research, scholarly work, and professional services. Preferred Qualifications 1. Demonstrated experience with data visualization consulting in an academic or professional position. 2. Demonstrated portfolio of data management and/or data visualization work. 3. Three years’ professional work experience in data visualization and/or data resource services. 4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage projects successfully. 5. Demonstrated evidences in research and scholarly work, and with strong research skills in the humanities and social sciences. 6. Experience in teaching or training others in data and visualization tools, and familiarity with open-source or cloud-based platforms, such as D3.js or Power BI, is a plus. 7. Experience and enthusiasm in providing training, mentoring, and supervising staff/student workers. 8. Fluency in oral and written Chinese.
