POSITION SUMMARY: The Science and Design Assistant works under the supervision of the science department head at the high school level. He or she is responsible for preparing materials and equipment for use in the science laboratories, and maintaining records on experiments conducted. The sciences involved include chemistry, biology, earth science, physics, and anatomy and physiology. The Science and Design Assistant performs the majority of his or her duties in an area designated for storage of lab equipment and supplies. He or she supervises Student Lab Aides, assigns tasks to the Aides, and prepares and administers tests related to their job duties. The Science and Design Assistant must understand the proper storage and use of chemicals, and other safety issues related to the use of lab equipment and materials. The Science and Design Assistant may be asked to assist a teacher in the facilitation of a laboratory activity, especially when there are safety concerns.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 1. Prepare classroom sets of equipment and raw materials for the science labs and design tasks, and give constructive suggestions when necessary 2. Purchase consumables for both the science and design departments, managing stock of commonly used materials. 3. Document management including an updated inventory of science and design equipment and other health and safety documentation. 4. Assist science and design teachers with student needs during class by being present during the laboratory or design work when requested by the teacher. This could include operating equipment and or supervising the operation of equipment. 5. Attend and participate in curricular planning meetings as requested by teachers. 6. Guide the students with their IA or EE projects with teacher instruction/support. 7. Manage and arrange the chemical inventory according to up-to-date health and safety guidelines. 8. Mix and prepare precise concentrations of solutions required for wet lab work. 9. Test laboratory procedures for accuracy and precision of data when requested. 10. Attend and participate in curricular planning meetings as requested by teachers. 11. Aid in the preparation, maintenance, and repairs of Design equipment. 12. Aid in communication with design equipment manufacturers regarding technical support. 13. Aid in the organization and preparation of Design resources 14. Aid in sourcing a wide range of products from local vendors, including price negotiations. 15. Work collaboratively with SCIS operations, IT, Finance, and other internal divisions to help maintain facilities, technologies and other resources. 16. Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Fluency in English and Mandarin 2. Experience with mixing chemicals and managing chemical inventory in a scientific settings 3. Ability to work with students, interest in education 4. Undergraduate or higher degree in a scientific field or in education with science focus 5. Actively strives for self-improvement as a life-long learner
