Role Description JOB TITLE Lifeguard DEPARTMENT PE Department LOCATION Shanghai SUPERVISOR Head of Aquatics (Line Manager) Director of Sport (Oversight of Sports Programme) OBJECTIVES Wellington College International Shanghai has a large swimming programme covering PE curriculum, competitive & Wellington Extra swimming. A Lifeguard, or Lifesaver, at Wellington is responsible for surveying a body of water and conducting rescues to help weak or injured swimmers get to safety. Their duties include speaking with swimmers to enforce swimming rules keeping track of each swimmer in the water and administering first aid to injured swimmers. Additionally, lifeguards at Wellington will be required to cover swim sessions, staff absences and duties when needed. Prospective applicants should have good verbal and written English as effective communication with the school community is crucial to school operations KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Examples of Duties (additional duties may be added at the discretion of relevant Heads): Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents: * Observes swimmers during lessons, CCA Programme, training sessions and all water based activities to ensure safety * Identifies issues / situations and acts upon them * Throw rescues * Lifesaving - need to react quickly * Administers immediate First Aid if required * Coordinates with nursing staff in necessary situation. * Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces to pool rules and regulations. Works to a timetable and schedule as set by the school to include: * Opening and closing the pool each day according to scheduled hours * Early morning sessions * Timetabled lessons throughout the school day * Evening and weekend sessions as scheduled by Head of Aquatics or Director of Sport * Closely monitoring activities related to the pool area, identifying any safety issues throughout shift * Swim competitions organised by the Sports Department and School Directing swimmers out of water in dangerous conditions: * Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas e.g. supervising students whilst changing and at start and end of lessons * Maintaining a clean pool environment * Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment). * Provides general information on pool operation to patrons. Administration: * Completes required paperwork e.g. completing pool entry log * Follows emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency. * Inspects facilities for cleanliness; completes general pool cleaning and maintenance duties e.g. reporting repairs in changing rooms and pool area & appropriate ambient temperature of adjoining areas Any other duties commensurate with the post The job description is not exhaustive and may be amended following appropriate consultation in the light of business needs BASIC QUALIFICATION Minimum Qualifications: * Minimum of 2 years’ experience * Must possess current Lifeguard Training and/or Community First Aid qualifications and Professional Rescuer Cardiopulmonary (CPR) certificate upon employment. * Is responsible for keeping updated with all qualifications relevant to this position EXPERTISE Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Knowledge of pool equipment and maintenance. * Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures. * Knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of the public at pools e.g. adhering to school policies which use these as reference Suitably qualified in: * Skilled in the application of lifesaving techniques. * Skilled in swimming * Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR.
