Department: Government Relations Job Title: Government Relations Manager Reports to: Government Relations Director
Position Objective:
Under the direction of the President and the GR Director, the Government Relations (GR) Manager coordinates and supports the Chamber’s government advocacy and programming. The GR Manager is responsible for managing AmCham Shanghai’s relationship with the U.S. government, U.S. policy-focused briefings and events, GR policy publications and content, GR taskforces, and the GA Conference and Dinners. The GR Manager should possess excellent event management, research, writing, and interpersonal skills. The GR Manager should work effectively with a small team and be comfortable interacting with both high-level government officials and business leaders. Additionally, the GR Manager will provide support for the Board of Governors (BOG) coordination, including communication, meeting logistics, minute-taking, and managing special projects such as AmCham Shanghai’s participation in the China International Import Expo (CIIE).
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Responsibility 1: Manage Relations with the U.S. Government, U.S. Business Associations, and Think Tanks – 30%
61 Under the supervision of the President and the GR Director, coordinate the Chamber’s engagement with the U.S. government, including planning and supporting the annual Washington D.C. Doorknock trip, facilitating the AmCham Shanghai delegation’s meetings with policymakers in D.C., including think tanks, Congress, and the administration, through the consulting company based in D.C. 61 Develop and maintain relationships with U.S. government representatives, including members of Congress and the U.S. Consulate. Provide support for U.S. government events and visits. 61 Cultivate relationships with key think tanks and business associations. When appropriate, coordinate policy discussions with other business associations.
Responsibility 2: Board of Governors (BOG) Coordination and Support – 30%
61 Communicate regularly with Board of Governors members regarding meeting schedules, agendas, and updates. 61 Coordinate logistics for BOG meetings, including venue setup, materials preparation, and technical requirements. 61 Take accurate minutes during BOG meetings, ensuring they are promptly written, reviewed, and distributed. 61 Track and follow up on action items arising from BOG meetings, ensuring timely completion. 61 Maintain up-to-date BOG documentation, including bylaws, policies, and meeting records.
Responsibility 3: Manage Policy Briefings, Workshops, Conferences, and GR Taskforces – 20%
61 Develop and manage the Government Policy briefing series, including seminars on cybersecurity, intellectual property rights (IPR), export controls, and U.S.-China trade relations. 61 Assist in organizing the annual GA Conference and GA Dinners. 61 Manage the GR Taskforces.
Responsibility 4: Special Project Support – 20%
61 Support high-profile projects, including AmCham Shanghai’s participation in the China International Import Expo (CIIE) and other major events. 61 Assist in organizing and coordinating logistics for exhibitions, conferences, and networking events, ensuring smooth operations. 61 Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure successful event execution and post-event follow-up. 61 Contribute to the development of promotional materials and ensure effective communication around key events and initiatives.
Qualifications:
61 2-3 years of experience in government relations, communications, business, or international relations. 61 A Bachelor’s degree in government relations, communications, business, or a related field. 61 A strong interest in and understanding of U.S.-China relations and business issues in China. 61 Experience in project and program management. 61 Ability to multitask and function as an active team member. 61 Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 61 Native-level English and business-level Chinese preferred.
