Department Overview
Aligning with TECH’s innovative nature, our Incentive Platform Department (INPD) is thinking big: building scalable platforms that powers the Rakuten Ecosystem worldwide.
And we in Point Platform Section are responsible for developing and operating Rakuten Point Platform, the most popular loyalty program in Japan. Through Rakuten Point, millions of users are connected everyday with popular Rakuten services such as EC, Bank, Card, as well as thousands of convenience stores all over Japan.

However, our mission doesn’t stop there: we develop and manage Rakuten PointClub Web and other web products, which are among the most popular sites in Rakuten. We will drive the improvement to maximize Rakuten Point value and contribute to the Rakuten Ecosystem. Position:
Why We Hire
We are looking for engineers for web front and backend development who can design, deliver and troubleshoot the web applications with multiple components developed in different technologies. You will join daily huddle to report your progress and work closely with Product Managers, Project managers and lead team members to design and develop the applications. You are expected to take ownership of the quality, delivery and reliability of our services and seek to continuously improve the system and process for your team, as well as mentoring other engineers.

Position Details
- Front & Backend development of Rakuten Point related systems
- Application development through design, coding, code review, test, release
- Improvement of existing services and features
- Introduction of new architecture, design of scalable system, and refactoring
- Improvement for development environment (Ex. CI/CD, test automation)
- Production support (on-call)
- Dev. support for team members


Mandatory Qualifications:
- 8+ years’ experience in Java development
- Experience in agile development (scrum & kanban)
- Development experience with a Relational database (Ex. MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, ProxySQL)
- 3+ years’ experience in leading a development team
- Ability to take proactive actions for the team’s success
- Fluent English communication skills


Desired Qualifications:
- MS or Ph.D in Computer Science or related technical discipline
- Experience in Kotlin development
- Experience in PHP development
- Design and development experience for high traffic systems
- Experience for CI/CD and test automation
- Experience with Container (Ex. Docker, Kubernetes, Istio)
- Experience for application deploy and operation (on-premises and usage of a Public cloud)
- Development experience with at least one of the following: Node.js, modern JavaScript frameworks (such as Angular, React, Webpack), JavaScript, NGINX Apache Tomcat
- Experience with Non-SQL development (Ex. Couchbase), especially KVS (including personal level)
- Experience with messaging systems (Ex. Kafka, RabbitMQ）
- Knowledge & experience in performance tuning
- Experience with JIRA / Confluence
- Experience in managing small to mid-size development teams
- Good communication & collaborative mindset to promote discussion and development with the dev. Team
- Experience working with global teams in different locations
- Japanese skills: Basic reading and writing
