Role Definition Caterpillar Large Power System Division is seeking a Design Engineer to lead the development of innovative solutions for exhaust and air starting systems within our advanced power products portfolio. This role will focus on driving the evolution of these critical systems through the New Technology Introduction (NTI) and New Product Introduction (NPI) phases, ensuring they meet the demanding requirements of modern engine applications. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engine platform team, and suppliers, to deliver robust, efficient, and cost-effective designs and products.
Key Responsibilities: 61 System & Component Design: Lead the design and optimization of exhaust and air starting systems, including schematic development, component selection, and validation, to meet Caterpillar’s regional and global product requirements. 61 Technology & Product Leadership: Spearhead the development of next-generation exhaust and air starting technologies, aligning with the division’s Multiple Generation Product Plan (MGPP) and strategic innovation goals. 61 Efficiency & Cost Optimization: Balance performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness in system designs, ensuring competitiveness in the marketplace. 61 Validation & Quality Assurance: Develop and execute Design Verification Plans (DVPs) and Reports (DVRs), ensuring compliance with APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) processes and addressing quality issues through NPI and ongoing production phases. 61 Supplier Collaboration: Foster strategic partnerships with suppliers, guiding technology development and quality readiness to support system integration and production goals. 61 Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, purchasing, quality, and engien platform teams to resolve technical challenges, implement design improvements, and support cost reduction initiatives. 61 Customer Focus: Translate customer needs and field feedback into actionable design improvements, ensuring products exceed expectations in performance and reliability. 61 Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay at the forefront of industry trends and technological advancements, incorporating new ideas and methodologies to enhance system designs and development processes.
Background & Experience Required: 61 Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 7 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience in exhaust system design, air starting systems, or related mechanical engineering domains. 61 Technical Expertise: Proven track record in designing complex mechanical systems, with a deep understanding of exhaust thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and air starting mechanisms. 61 Software Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks) and simulation software (e.g., ANSYS) for system modeling and analysis. 61 Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality results under tight deadlines while balancing competing priorities. 61 Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, and customers. 61 Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical systems and drive continuous improvement.
Desired Experience: 61 Industry Experience: Prior experience in the design of exhaust systems, air starting systems, or related components for heavy-duty machinery or automotive applications. 61 Innovation & Creativity: A history of driving innovation in product design, process improvement, or technology development. 61 Data-Driven Mindset: Sensitivity to data and proficiency in using analytical tools to inform design decisions and optimize system performance. Leadership: Experience leading cross-functional teams or mentoring junior engineers in a fast-paced engineering environment.
