Position Overview: Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is a Sino-US Joint Venture University approved by the Ministry of Education and co-founded by Duke University, Wuhan University and Kunshan City Government. DKU is a non-profit public welfare social organization with independent legal status. The campus is located in Kunshan Yangcheng Lake Science Park, Jiangsu Province. DKU seeks to appoint one senior coordinator for lab safety to account for the rapidly expanding teaching and research laboratories. Working closely with colleagues from the lab safety office and lab management office, the senior coordinator plays an essential role in ensuring ongoing practices are in compliance with both national and international standards, ensuring good lab practice and efficient daily operation.
DKU offers a series of graduate degree programs and launched its undergraduate degree program in 2018. Our campus provides an innovative, interdisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts experience to a student body that will number 2500 students and 200+ faculty, with a student body represented by over 70 countries. There are currently 15+ lab staff members supporting lab courses and daily operation of the lab infrastructure, which is composed of 25+ teaching and research labs (including one Biosafety level II lab) spreading over 5000 sqm lab space. The Senior Coordinator will play an indispensable role in the future development of our lab infrastructure to provide professional and comprehensive support for the core mission of DKU. Reports to: Director of Lab and Research Safety
Essential Duties: 1. Develop, implement, coordinate, promote, and evaluate safety policies and programs encompassing environmental and occupational health and safety, biosafety, lab safety, waste management, hazardous materials management, etc. 2. Develop and implement biosafety planning protocols, in coordination with researchers. 3. Develop and implement regular laboratory review and audit processes. 4. Work with the research support office (RSO) in developing mechanisms to ensure researchers are in compliance with the safety requirements of funding agencies. 5. Work with lab management office (LMO) in setting up and implementing lab safety relevant rules and regulations at university level. 6. Coordinate with LMO on lab safety relevant data collection and analysis. 7. Develop systems for handling chemical, biological and radiation wastes. 8. Conduct general laboratory safety training for faculty, staff and students who work in laboratories. 9. Conduct laboratory safety inspection. 10. Monitor and advise appropriate personnel of new regulations concerning environmental and occupational health and safety from central, provincial or local government that may impact the University. 11. Monitor and advise appropriate personnel of latest update of regulations concerning environmental and occupational health and safety at an international level. 12. Work with DKU operations on the renovation or setting up of lab spaces to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. 13. Know the current legal requirements concerning regulated substances, as provided through EHS resources. 14. Perform other duties as assigned. 15. Required Qualifications: 1. A Master of Science degree or closely related field. 2. At least 5 years’ working experience as lab safety officer in an English working environment. 3. Fluent in English and Mandarin. 4. Attention to details, familiar with lab safety relevant rules and regulations. 5. Applicants with a certificate by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or other similar organizations are encouraged to apply.
