The Role:
A Student Support Teacher Assistant (SSTA) functions in a supporting role for the Student Support Team and the relevant Co-Teachers/Subject Teachers. As a school we are trying to achieve high standards by responding professionally, sensitively, and with care to the needs of all our pupils. SSTAs assist teachers with teaching & learning, administrative duties and carrying out school policies and procedures. The Head of Student Support oversees the SSTA’s schedules and responsibilities, as well as the appraisal process. The Assistant to the SLT/Head of Office is responsible for the SSTA’s leave arrangements.
Work activities generally include: 1. Help students in all areas of the curriculum. 2. Assist with the preparation of the learning environment. 3. Work with other professionals 4. Act as liaison with parents 5. Maintain pupil records. 6. Provide extra support to students with special/additional needs.
Teaching and Learning 1. Support small groups/individuals in the classroom – especially English and Maths (push-in) 2. Work with individuals or small groups outside the classroom (pull-out) 3. Assist in the implementation of Learning Support Plans, monitoring the strategies listed and supporting teachers to focus on these. 4. Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Programmes for students and help monitor their progress. 5. Assist class teachers with maintaining student records, including accurate translation of specialised terminology. 6. Support individuals to keep attention on the lesson – monitoring behaviour to help keep them “on task”. 7. Support students with emotional or behavioural problems and help develop their social skills, so that they may feel part of the class and school.
Administrative duties 1. Prepare and present displays of students' work, including using electronic forms e.g., Seesaw. 2. Support the Student Support Team in photocopying, laminating and other tasks to aid teaching. 3. Translate Learning Support documents and other records. 4. Provide live translation within sensitive parent meetings. 5. Maintain/update learning environment displays.
Standards and quality assurance 1. Support the YCIS Philosophy and Objectives 2. Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance. 3. Be flexible, show initiative, have patience and understanding, and a team player. 4. Have good technology skills. 5. Attend team and staff meetings. 6. Attend staff training, especially all forms of Child Protection sessions, as guided by the Safeguarding Lead 7. Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Head of Student Support or Senior leaders e.g., Head of Chinese 8. Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
