Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Customer Engagement (40%)
This position is responsible for teaming up with our sales and product marketing team to build and maintain strong relationships with our existing and potential customers in the Asia Pacific region. They are also responsible for:
- Partnering directly with OEMs to develop and co-develop solutions specifically for their cutting system to meet customer performance and efficiency requirements
- Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with key customers and suppliers via in-person visits and other methods
- Interact with OEMs to obtain VOC with a technical focus. Gain insights into unmet needs and communicate findings to internal teams to inform both technical and commercial decisions
- Conduct product demonstrations and/or publish reports that provide technical support to customers
2.Complete Product Design Projects (20%)
In providing a high level of engineering knowledge and practice, this position leads formal and informal projects independently and participates in developing departmental processes. Through evaluation of new product ideas, this role reviews market direction and customer needs, as well as the following:
- Facilitate and lead ideation and concept generation; lead concept selection and alternative analysis with ability to persuade others to adopt or approve both internally and with customers
- Develop alternate designs and advise customers on tradeoffs of requirement decisions; facilitate discussions regarding customization requests and clarify the impact on price, performance and lead time
- Standardize test protocols to ensure data outputs directly correlate to field applications and established design targets
- Apply advanced understanding/experience in manufacturing processes to create a design robust to manufacturing that complies with Oregon Tool’s quality system
- Lead or contribute to large scale projects, such as technical investigation, technical solution, manufacturing study, etc.
- Negotiate existing or develop complex new product specifications with stakeholders
- Develop complex product testing methods and plans
- Responsible for meeting all design parameters, including schedule, cost and performance
- Perform statistical and 3D tolerance studies
- Facilitate and lead the following analyses: product failure, hazards, statistical, root cause, risk, competitive product
- Facilitate and lead data collection and root cause analysis
- Use the Oregon Tool product development process, adhere to or lead project schedules, resource and cost estimates
- Facilitate, lead and provide critical feedback in design reviews
- Other projects and duties as assigned
3.New Business Development (20%)
This engineer will be responsible for support in the development of market share capture plans, go-win strategies and teaming approaches with OEMs in addition to:
- Serving as technical point of contact with OEM engineering leaders, actively establishing relationships to enable collaborative product development
- Leading rapid prototype build/test cycles and data collection to expedite technical decision-making
- Maintaining thorough competitive product understanding based on data, customer feedback and market research analysis
- Providing product engineering support for the Oregon Tool product portfolio expansion to cover gaps in existing assortment
- Assist in developing strategic plans, identifying required new capabilities, providing feedback on products, industry trends and customer needs, and fostering partnerships with key players to support successful bid proposals
4.Supplier / Lab Capability Building (20%)
This position will work closely with our strategic supply partners and our internal performance and metallurgy labs to improve capabilities, continuously improve and win more business with our customers. They will:
- Prepare documentation necessary to solicit project funding and business case to explain technical recommendations
- Create continuity between projects by ensuring standardization in product testing methods and plans
- Support lab resources in the development of processes, equipment, and expertise, while delivering accurate and meaningful data
- Participate in cost reduction and DTV efforts from a product design / customer viewpoint
- Lead technical activities with suppliers
- Lead research with outside consultants
- Facilitate and lead continuous improvement processes and projects
- Lead collaborative efforts and maintain open communication and effective team environment
- Define schedules based on projects and experience
- Set tasks and priorities for self and others
- Foster and manage internal and external relationships
- Manage communication and assignments up and down in organization; hold others accountable for project organization and meeting goals and deadlines
- Coach and mentor others regarding customer service; manage communications and opportunities with customers and recommend actions
Communication and Documentation
In addition to communicating and defending design decisions, this position renders technical opinions and offers potential solutions, sustains an atmosphere of open communication among managers, team members, external and internal stakeholders, as well as performs the following:
- Prepare design review packages
- Responsible for minutes to design reviews, including action items
- Prepare thorough technical reports with recommendations to project teams and management
- Prepare all necessary communications with supply chain, team members, outside parties, management to ensure quality technical decision-making
- Prepare presentations to outside suppliers, vendors, leadership team
- Work closely with product management to understand customer needs and provide solutions to equipment issues
- Lead peers and senior management regarding technical direction and issues; be aware of appropriate communication
- Represent company at high level both inside and outside the organization
- Foster and maintain collaborative environment; lead collaborative efforts
Education:
Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Engineering required: major in design or mechanical engineering preferred
Knowledge & Experience:
- 5+ years’ experience including demonstrated proficiency using Pro-E / Solidworks; must be able to create 3D models of designs and create 2D drawings to acceptable drafting practices
- Proven experience leading product development projects from concept to launch
- Experience with designing metal components for high volume manufacturing environments preferred
Skills/Abilities:
Typical skills and abilities may include the following:
- Strong Chinese and English language skills
- Strong experience in a product development role is required
- Proficient in developing design concepts and assemblies
- Advanced skills in translating customer needs to product specifications
- Applies relevant standards for industry and product safety and compliance
- Applies advanced understanding/experience in manufacturing processes to ensure a design is robust to manufacturing
- Strong experience in developing and analyzing statistics
- Proficient in applying fundamentals of geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GDT)
- Preparing detailed sketches and layouts of components
- Experienced working with suppliers; open to others’ experience and expertise in materials and production
- Demonstrated decision making and team skills
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated flexibility and comfort with change management concepts
- Able to complete all responsibilities in a timely and professional manner while maintaining quality
- Excellent problem-solving skills for complex systems; able to analyze, research relevant information and gauge its importance when making decisions
- Effective written and oral communication skills at all levels of the organization; ability to express oneself clearly and in terms everyone can understand
- Creative thinker with strong mechanical aptitude
- Collaborative and effective team player who understands communication differences among locations and can work with teams who are globally dispersed

- Experience with high volume manufacturing and inline testing and related fixturing
- Organized, focused and detail oriented while successfully managing multiple projects
- Proven skills in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel), current industry software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD); data management skills required (SAP preferred)
Availability:
Available to work on site during assigned shift. Remote work potential when approved by manager. Must be able to travel domestically and internationally as much as 30% of the time for potentially as long as 1 month in duration.
